A specialized medical exam is offered to any child who has allegations or concerns of abuse. The center employs Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE-P) who are available to perform specialized medical evaluations on-site in a child-friendly, non-threatening environment.
The purpose of the exam is to collect evidence and document trauma if present (especially in acute cases). The exam also assesses sexually transmitted infections, injuries, and pregnancies. The SANE can provide treatment and/or referrals for sexually transmitted infections and injuries. Most importantly, it is performed to reassure the child and family that his/her body is okay.
One of our facility dogs may also be available to sit with the child during the medical exam to help ease fears and anxieties.
